5 Interior Style Tips to Ensure You Ooze Stylish Chic in your Country Home and Beyond

Wondering how to keep your home looking Country Chic and not Farmhouse frump? It’s simple with these fabulous interior style tips. Whether it’s Gucci Chic, Hermes Flair or Classic Ralph Lauren, just add some equestrian inspiration to elevate spaces to be aspirational, beautiful and luxurious.

1. Ralph Lauren Inspired

Ralph Lauren is famous for bringing Equestrian style to the mainstream through his fashion and homewares empire and I’m a big fan of one of his most popular looks – Caramel leather and hues of blue. I love the relaxed yet luxurious palette. If you prefer a more preppy look add some bold stripes through soft furnishings.

For a more classic look add plaid, which will immediately transform your space into a more traditionally formal country look. You can of course take this look from your home to your truck or even your tack room. Don’t forget to layer using different textures and most importantly use quality items that reflect the sophisticated look – cheap tends to look cheap!

2. Go ‘Oh So Gucci’

Introduce snaffle bits, luxury velvets and decadent colour palettes. Tom Ford pretty much single handedly brought the Gucci house back from oblivion in the 1990’s with drama and a lot of it! Rich velvets, satins, snaffle bits on bags, belts, prints and a moody colour palette that oozed cool and decadent sophistication.

Transfer this fashion statement to furnishings and you can recreate your own piece of Gucci drama in your home or horse truck! Think luxe velvet, black leather, faux fur and snaffle accents. Layer on layer of greys, blacks, white and pops of silver with a touch of colour from fresh simple floral sprays.

3. Be ‘Tres Jolie’

I adore the pretty Hermes signature style. The bright ‘jolie’ of the world’s premiere Equestrian Atelier, defined by its unmistakable orange branding, its baroque horses and bright prints that adorn the famous silk scarves are unmistakable.
An important thing to remember with this look is to keep it chic, don’t overdo it! Not too many pieces and not too many prints! Show some restraint by adding one or two accent cushions sporting a bright palette with definite orange highlights and keep your room base, i.e. floor covering, furniture and wall colour, neutral. Compliment your ‘feature’ by picking up various colour points in your coffee table vignette, wall art or throws. For a seriously luxury look, framing the famous ‘Hermes’ scarves and hanging as a collective is absolutely stunning!

4. Adorn Your Walls

Make a statement with breathtaking wall art. I don’t know about you, but the beauty of horses – their strength, loyalty and willingness – never ceases to amaze me. I love it when a photographer or artist captures this in wall art. Personally, I err on the side of oversized art, art that makes you feel like you are in the presence of something truly awe inspiring. Art that you can almost step into!
Entryways or open plan living spaces offer a wonderful platform for maximum impact. Alternatively, a wall at the end of a corridor will frame the right piece of art perfectly. Bear in mind that sometimes the art can be a little more abstract, perhaps a close up of a working shoulder, a plaited mane on a velvet neck or legs mid half pass. Be creative!

5. Light and Airy Hamptons

Bring your luxe Hamptons style to life with equine accents. We all know that the light and airy Hamptons Style is based on the ultimate in comfort, multiple layers across all facets of a space and yes, the odd Equestrian accent here and there.
The Hamptons Classic is an annual event and a bit like our Polo in The City. It’s a place where people want to be seen and associated with the aspirational and luxe equestrian lifestyle: sipping champagne, shopping in the trade village marquees and wearing their finery. So it makes sense that people like to have a piece of that in their homes. Hamptons style is light, bright and full of florals, bold geometric prints in blue, white, beige and sea mist, linen, cashmere, velvets, white wood paneling and pendant lights.
In terms of equestrian accents, it should be just that, accents. Incorporate a sculptural equine table lamp, hints of tan leather such as a leather storage box with feature stirrup (these are fab for remote controls by the way!) or wall art featuring a beautiful pony or hack. Remember, in the Hamptons setting be a little bit whimsical and choose white horse portraits, staying more on the subtle side and in keeping with the Hamptons ‘white’ base colour. For utmost simplicity, the addition of a wooden or white horse sculpture on a sideboard, bookshelf or side table will fit perfectly too.
